Sagging of the eyebrows can also contribute to an aged appearance to the eyelid region due to bunching up of the upper eyelid skin. This in turn can obscure your vision.

Overactive muscles resulting from upper eyelid excess can also contribute to the further development of forehead and frown lines.

All these changes understandably can lead to an aged or tired looking face. Fortunately, Brow lift surgery offers a potentially ideal solution to address these changes. Brow lift consultations are available at the North Shore and Norwest, and Central Coast Plastic Surgery Clinics of Dr Chaithan Reddy.

Brow lift surgery can be an effective facial rejuvenation procedure. If you would like to find out whether brow lift surgery is the right option for you, please schedule your initial consultation with Dr Reddy at The Plastic Surgery Clinic & Medispa, serving Sydney’s Upper and Lower North Shore and communities throughout the Central Coast region.

Am I a good candidate for brow lift surgery?

Individuals with droopy or heavyset eyebrows are suitable candidates for brow lift surgery. A brow lift procedure is designed to improve the appearance of both the forehead and also the brow region. It aims to reduce the appearance of forehead wrinkles and frown lines, and restore the eyebrow to a more youthful and elevated position.

Lifting the brow to the correct position can also dramatically improve the appearance of the eyelids by reducing eyelid fullness and skin folds.

There have been various studies on what constitutes a beautiful eyebrow. In women, the eyebrow should sit above the orbital rim (eye socket rim) and it should exhibit a gentle curve arching up and outwards. In men, the brow generally sits more horizontally and slightly lower than their female counterparts. It is important that these differences are taken into consideration so that an overdone “surprised” look is avoided, and also so that feminisation of the male face does not occur.

What does the brow lift procedure entail?

Brow lift surgery may be performed through a variety of approaches, including:

  • A traditional coronal (scalp) approach
  • A pretrichial or trichophytic (hairline) approach
  • an endoscopic (‘key hole’) approach
  • via a well-hidden short scar temporal approach (within your hair-bearing scalp)
  • via an upper blepharoplasty (eyelid) incision

The choice of technique will depend upon a number of factors including your hairline position, the curve of your forehead, the position of your brows, and also your desires. Dr Reddy will discuss all the options available to you at the time of consultation.

Depending upon the type of brow lift procedure chosen, the surgery can be performed either under a general or local anaesthetic. Dr Reddy will guide you through the decision making process, depending upon the complexity of your surgery.

Prior to your anaesthesia, Dr Reddy will mark out the planned incisions using surgical calipers, ensuring that symmetry is optimised. The choice of incision (coronal, hairline, temporal) would have been determined and discussed with you at the time of your pre-operative consultation. Once you are asleep (or have received the local anaesthetic), skin incisions will be made and the brow will be freed up. The brow will be then elevated and secured into a more youthful and elevated position. Depending upon what was discussed at your pre-operative consultation, additional procedures may also be performed at this time. Such adjunctive facial rejuvenation procedures include blepharoplasty, facial fat grafting, and dermal fillers/anti-wrinkle injections. Upon completion of the brow lift procedure and any of the aforementioned adjunctive procedures, skin closure is performed with delicate fine gauge sutures. Specific dressings and antibiotic ointment will be applied to your incisions. Dr Reddy will check up on you, and talk to you after you have woken up from surgery, to ensure that you are comfortable and well prepared for your trip home. A specific post-operative instruction plan together with 24 hour contact details will be given to you at the time of your discharge from hospital (or clinic) to help ensure that you are completely at ease during your recovery period at home. Dr Reddy will see you regularly during your recovery period, until you are completely satisfied with your results and progress.

How long is my hospital stay?

The brow lift procedure may be performed under a general anaesthetic or local anaesthetic. The choice will largely depend upon the extent of the surgery and also what you feel most comfortable with.

For simpler brow lift cases, the procedure may be performed in house under local anaesthesia in our fully equipped St. Leonard’s clinic procedure room.

General anaesthesia in a hospital environment is recommended for more extensive brow lift surgery, or when it is combined with other procedures. Patients may return home the same day or elect to stay in hospital overnight depending upon their preference.

What does my aftercare involve?

Dr Reddy will check up on you, and talk to you after you have woken up from your brow lift surgery to ensure that you are comfortable and well prepared for your recovery process. If you are staying in hospital overnight, Dr Reddy will review you again in the morning prior to your discharge from hospital. A specific post-operative instruction plan together with 24 hour contact details will be given to you at the time of your discharge from hospital to help ensure that you are completely at ease during your recovery period at home.

Dr Reddy will see you regularly during your recovery period. Your first post-operative visit will be at the 5-7 day post-operative mark. All dressings and sutures will be removed at this visit. Advice on scar management and skin care will also be provided until you are completely satisfied with your results and progress.

What is the down time?

Discomfort is usually mild following brow lift surgery, with most patients only requiring simple over the counter pain medication. Often it is a sense of tightness in the forehead region that you will feel. This improves over the first few weeks following surgery as the tissues adjust to their new resting position. Most patients will be able to attend to their day-to-day activities the day after surgery. Driving is however not recommended for the first week after surgery as your eyes may feel a little dry or gritty during this time. You may also experience some sensitivity to bright lights during the first few days after surgery.

Bruising is quite common in the forehead region. This is mostly apparent during the first week after brow lift surgery, although may persist for two weeks. Generally allow for a two-week down time period from your work place (due to bruising), although you may return after one week with camouflage make-up if desired. It is important to avoid any strenuous activities for approximately 4 weeks after surgery in order to minimise potential bleeding, bruising and swelling.

When can I see the final results?

The results will be quite evident immediately after your brow lift surgery. Bruising and mild swelling will still however be present at this stage. By two weeks, generally, all bruising will have resolved. You will generally see the final results at the 4-6 week post-operative mark. The scars associated with brow lift surgery are typically very favourable, with scars largely hidden either in your hair-bearing scalp or positioned within the natural skin creases to make them minimally visible.

Dr Reddy’s primary goal as a plastic surgeon is to not only produce world-class aesthetic results but to ensure that you are a 100% satisfied with your results. He is only professionally satisfied when this outcome is achieved.
