Fat Grafting
Consultations for Facial fat grafting can be undertaken at our North Shore and Norwest, and Central Coast Plastic Surgery Clinic locations.
Dr Chaithan Reddy employs the procedure in a variety of settings including:
- Replacing lost facial volume due to the ageing process
- Correction of tear troughs
- Lip augmentation
- Chin augmentation

Facial fat grafting is commonly also combined with other surgical procedures such as blepharoplasty (eyelid reduction) surgery and facelift surgery.

Am I a good candidate for facial fat grafting?
Facial fat grafting provides an effective longer-term solution for augmentation of the facial region. A commonly treated area includes the mid face region to further accentuate and define the cheek-bone contour. The lower eyelid region is commonly also treated to correct hollowing around the eyes, a tell tale sign of ageing process. It is this hollowing that may also be contributing to the formation of ‘tear-trough’ deformities or the presence of dark circles.
Facial fat grafting also provides an effective solution for addressing volume loss in the facial region due to factors other than the normal ageing process. Individuals may require replacement of lost facial volume due to various causes including trauma, congenital conditions, and or certain medical conditions.
The main advantage of fat grafting over traditional facial fillers is its long lasting nature. The augmentation that occurs with fat grafting may remain apparent for several years.

What does the fat grafting procedure entail?
The fat grafting procedure is routinely performed under general anaesthesia, although small volume fat grafting may be performed under local anaesthesia in suitable candidates. The procedure entails obtaining fat from other body regions (e.g., abdomen, hips, thighs) using fine cannulas. The fat is then prepared in such a way that unnecessary oils and fluids are removed. This allows the concentrated fat to be then deposited in the relevant facial areas requiring correction or augmentation. The fat is typically deposited using fine 1mm blunt-tip cannulas. The results are often immediately apparent with the majority of swelling typically resolving within the first one to two weeks. It is thought that the stem cell component of the deposited fat may also lead to an improvement in overall skin quality in the treated areas.
How long is my hospital stay?
Dr Reddy will check up on you, and talk to you after you have woken up from your fat grafting surgery to ensure that you are comfortable and well prepared for your recovery period. The surgery is typically performed as a day surgery procedure. A specific post-operative instruction plan together with 24 hour contact details will be given to you at the time of your discharge from hospital to help ensure that you are completely at ease during your recovery period at home.
What does my aftercare involve?
Dr Reddy will see you throughout your recovery period. You will be able to attend to your self-care needs shortly after surgery and you will be able to shower the day after your fat grafting procedure. Following discharge from hospital, you will be reviewed again in our North Shore or Norwest plastic surgery clinic approximately 5-10 days later. The fine steristrips (surgical tape) that would have been applied at the time of your surgery will be removed at this visit. You will continue to be reviewed until both Dr Reddy and you are completely satisfied with your results and progress
What is the down time?
Discomfort is usually mild after a fat transfer procedure. Generally allow up to one week down time from your work place, although you may return sooner if your work is relatively sedentary.
When can I see the final results?
The results of your fat grafting procedure are immediately apparent. Bruising and some degree of swelling will still however be present at this stage. By two weeks, generally all of the bruising will have resolved. Most of the swelling will have resolved during the first week, although the final result and contour will not be apparent until you have reached the two to three month post-operative mark. The major advantage of fat grafting over traditional ‘fillers’ is that the results are considered to be long lasting.
