Liposuction For Men
Liposuction, also known as liposculpture, is a procedure designed to eliminate unwanted deposits of fat. Typically in men, areas that are prone to excess fat include the abdominal region, chest (commonly referred to as male breasts or “man boobs”), and hips often referred to as “love handles”.
Liposuction can also be used to treat unwanted fatty deposits in the facial region as well as the upper neck area, which is responsible for a “double chin” appearance. The surgical scars are routinely less than a centimeter and the downtime is minimal.
Am I good candidate?
Liposuction for men is commonly performed to improve body contour in the following body regions:
- Abdomen
- Hips and waistline
- Neck and chin
- Breasts (man boobs)
It is important that you speak with your plastic surgeon to assess whether you are a suitable candidate for liposuction. Suitability for surgery will depend mainly upon the amount of excess skin and your skin tone.

What Does Liposuction for Men Entail?
The procedure is usually performed under a general anaesthetic. Smaller volume liposuction procedures can however be performed under local anaesthesia in our fully equipped procedure room. Prior to your anaesthesia, Dr Reddy will mark out the planned regions to be treated. Liposuction can be utilised for both body contouring procedures as well as for the treatment of excess fat deposits in the facial region. The procedure is undertaken using a suction cannula that is passed back and forth through the fatty deposits. In the process, the fat is broken up and removed via the suction tubing. The small bore cannulas are inserted under the skin via small skin incisions (2-5mm in size). Upon completion of the procedure, a compression garment (measured to your body region) will usually be applied to provide gentle compression to the treated areas.
How Long Is My Hospital Stay?
Almost all patients (except ‘Megaliposuction’ patients) may return home the same day. Dr Reddy will check up on you post-surgery to ensure that you’re comfortable and well prepared for your recovery period. A specific post-operative instruction plan will be given at the time of your discharge from the hospital (or clinic), as well as a 24 hour contact number to ensure you are completely at ease during your recovery period at home.
What Does My Aftercare Involve?
Dr Reddy will see you throughout your recovery period, with a post-operative review at 5-10 days after surgery. All dressings and sutures will be removed at this visit. It is recommended that you continue to wear your compression garment for a total of 6 weeks as this will optimise your results and help reduce swelling. You’ll continue the specified post-operative visits until both Dr Reddy and yourself are completely satisfied with your progress. Providing you have an initial referral all subsequent follow-ups are included in your surgical fee.
What Is the Downtime?
The degree of Discomfort experienced after liposucion directly correlates with the extent of liposuction that you have had. Most patients will be able to walk and attend to their daily self care needs shortly after the procedure. We recommend avoiding any strenuous activity for the first 3 weeks after surgery and you may return to work once you feel comfortable to do so.
When Can I See the Final Results
Results will be quite evident with in the first few days after your surgery. However, bruising and swelling will still be apparent at this stage and may persist for a few weeks. You may also notice some alteration in sensation in the treated areas. This generally resolves within the first few weeks after surgery. Majority of the post-operative swelling is expected to resolve within 4 weeks after surgery, and the final result will typically become apparent at the 3 month post-operative mark. For some individuals it may take longer for all residual swelling to completely resolve. It is important you wear your compression garment for the instructed period in order to minimise post-operative swelling and fluid retention.
